Tamil Nadu has one of India's most diverse industrial bases, and the Chennai Bench of the National Company Law Tribunal reflects it. The bench hears insolvency and company cases for companies registered in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry: automobile and auto component makers around Chennai, textile and knitwear companies in Coimbatore and Tiruppur, leather exporters in Vellore and Ambur, engineering firms, shipping and logistics companies, IT services, hospitals and real estate developers.
The bench sits on the 3rd floor of Corporate Bhawan, the UTI Building, at 29 Rajaji Salai, Chennai. Appeals go to the NCLAT's Chennai Bench, which sits at Ezhilagam Annex in Chepauk. This page explains the bench's coverage, the kinds of cases it hears, how matters move, and how we work through our associate office in Chennai.

Which companies go to Chennai
Under Section 60(1) of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, the bench is decided by the registered office. A Coimbatore textile company or a Puducherry manufacturer is heard in Chennai. Kerala and Lakshadweep companies go to Kochi, and Karnataka companies to Bengaluru.
Many large groups in Tamil Nadu have their registered office in Chennai with plants across the state and beyond. For groups with companies in several states, cases may be split between benches, and a transfer to one bench needs an application to the Principal Bench. Personal guarantors of loans to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry companies are proceeded against before the Chennai Bench.

Auto component supply chains in insolvency
When a large auto component maker becomes insolvent, the effects run up and down the supply chain. Its own suppliers become operational creditors, often owed for months of deliveries. Its customers, the vehicle makers, may need continuity of supply and may even fund the CIRP to keep production lines running. Tooling owned by customers but kept at the supplier's plant can become a point of dispute.
For suppliers, the key is to file claims promptly with full documentation (see filing claims) and to watch whether the resolution professional treats them as critical suppliers, since supplies during the CIRP are paid as CIRP costs. For customers, it is to establish ownership of tooling and dies through clear documents. For bidders, it is to understand the customer contracts and whether they survive the change of control.

How we work on Tamil Nadu matters
We are a litigation practice led by Advocate BK Singh, with offices in Dwarka (New Delhi) and Vaishali (Ghaziabad), and an associate office in Chennai. For Chennai matters, this is what you can expect:
- Local appearance: associate counsel in Chennai attend hearings and the registry.
- Supplier claims documented: purchase orders, deliveries, GST records and ledgers lined up before the demand notice.
- Appeals tracked: we know that appeals from Chennai go to the NCLAT at Chennai and diarise the deadlines.
- Honest advice on forum: disputed claims may suit a suit or arbitration.
- Written fee terms: agreed stage by stage, never linked to the outcome.
Mistakes we see in Tamil Nadu matters
- Filing a Kerala company's case in Chennai
- Filing an appeal from NCLT Chennai at the NCLAT in New Delhi
- Using Section 9 where quality complaints were raised before the demand notice
- Not establishing ownership of tooling kept at a supplier's plant
- Missing the deadline to file a claim in a supplier's CIRP
A component supplier in a customer's CIRP
Here's a made-up example. A Hosur forging company supplied components worth Rs 2.1 crore to a Chennai auto parts maker, which was then admitted into CIRP by its bank. The forging company continued supplying because the resolution professional asked it to keep the line running.
We filed its claim for pre-CIRP dues in Form B with the purchase orders, invoices and GST records, and wrote to the resolution professional confirming that post-CIRP supplies would be paid as CIRP costs. The resolution professional agreed. The pre-CIRP claim was admitted and treated in the plan, and post-CIRP supplies were paid in full as they fell due.
A Tiruppur knitwear family company
Here's a second made-up example. Three brothers each held a third of a Tiruppur knitwear exporter. Two brothers began running the business through a new firm owned by their sons, diverting export orders. The third brother found out when a long-standing buyer told him its orders had moved to the new firm.
We filed an oppression petition before NCLT Chennai with emails from the buyer and the new firm's export records. The bench directed the company to produce its order book and restrained diversion of orders pending the hearing. The brothers later agreed to merge the new firm's business back into the company and appoint an independent director.
Before your first hearing
For clients outside Tamil Nadu, we prepare a hearing note setting out the dates, the amount in default, the demand notice and any reply, with page references. For supply claims, the note includes a reconciliation of purchase orders, invoices, GST records and payments, because the bench may ask how the figure was reached. In family company disputes, we add a simple chart of the shareholding and the board's composition over time.
Leather and textile exporters
Leather companies in Vellore and Ambur and textile exporters in Tiruppur depend on export receivables and on environmental compliance, especially for effluent treatment. A closure order from the pollution control board, or a large overseas buyer going insolvent, can push a company into default quickly. In a CIRP, the resolution professional must secure the receivables and keep the unit compliant, because a closed unit loses value fast. Suppliers of hides, chemicals or yarn should file claims promptly, and bidders should check environmental consents and any orders from the National Green Tribunal before pricing a plan.
